While going to college is part of the American Dream, not all of us can make that dream happen without some sort of financial assistance. The good news is that there is money to be had if we simply invest some time and resources finding it. At GoLearn.com we discuss some of the basics on what type of money is available, how to find it and what it takes to qualify to receive it.

One of the most desirable forms of financial aid is a scholarship. This is because scholarships are financial awards that do not require repayment. Though this money is free there is usually a hitch associated with receiving the scholarship. Depending on the scholarship and who is awarding it there are criteria that must be met. These criteria typically reflect the values and purposes of the donor. For instance, scholarships may be awarded based on financial need, acedemic acheivement, athletic acheivement, ethnicity, by the individual institution or even by companies to children of their employees. Labor unions, the military and other specific groups and organizations typically offer scholarships to their members as well.

College scholarships can also be obtained by or through the institution a student wishes to attend. Many specific degree programs offer scholarships to attract and promote the particular areas of study. For example a university may offer scholarships to students wishing to pursue careers in Engineering, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Journalism etc...Other collages and universities, especially large long-standing institutions have foundations through which perspective students can obtain scholarship money.

School Scholarships and financial aid are available to those students pursing an education at a vocational college as well. Whether you are going to an Art or Culinary Institue, School of Architecture or a specialized business college, there are scholarships available.

Aside from scholarships, there are other forms of financial aid available as well. Grants are another type of financial award that does not require repayment. Federal government Pell Grants are an example. Many private foundations and organizations offer grants as well through philanthropic endowments. Student loans are another way people and families can get the financial help they need for college. There are federal and state government loans as well as private loans. There is even a program in which investors finance your education in return for a portion or percentage of your future earnings. Now thats a novel idea! Learning to find the type of financial aid most appropriate for you will simply require sitting down and discussing your educational goals with your parents, teachers and counselors. Once you determine what your needs are you can learn to select the programs and aid best suited to your individual situation.
